Dear Adam:
I am assuming you have checked the motherboard manual configuration and the
dip switch settings are proper for a BIOS detected CPU speed. It is best to
let the BIOS do the work especially as you are learning. Verify the base
speed and mulitplier for the CPU you purchased. I may be missing something
but if you are needing an internal frequency of 2,170 MHz (CPU acutal speed)
with DDR RAM running at 333/2=166 MHz external frequency your muliplier would
be 6.5X not 13X.
Once you work through the board settings if you are still having problems. I
would first check to see if the fan on the CPU was working properly. The
fact that you had a slower CPU detected by the BIOS and a blue screen when
forced makes me suspect some impact on the CPU; perhaps too much heat. If
you have any doubt I would replace the standard fan with a super cooler.
Make sure you have a small amount of heat transfer paste between the CPU and
fan heat sink.
My experience shows that RAM is often a problem but you have managed that
issue. Second, with support items like fans check fully; the motherboard is
usually the next thing to replace and finally the CPU for me is the last item
causing initial problems. Work through those possibilities and you will
learn something important.
Good luck,
Mike Scott
