Hey Paul,
You can get around this..In "Control Panel", "System", find your SCSI
listing......double click it then click on "Refresh"......and then your
scanner should work again without rebooting.  I had to do this with a
Microtek ScanMaker E3 because I would turn it off after each use.

I have a Umax scsi scanner running with win98se.  The scanner must be
powered up PRIOR to booting the pc, otherwise mine will not work.  The scsi
recognition is made at boot time, powering on the scanner later will not
enable it to connect.
