I just finished reading a book about Shackleton the Antarctic explorer that
somebody gave me for Xmas. I was struck by the accounts of how happy the
men were when they were stranded for over a year in the Antarctic. After
months in shabby shelters, no change of clothes, freezing cold, and not sure
whether they would ever be rescued, one fellow who was by nature a bit mean
spirited, had "the happiest day of his life" and hoped they wouldn't be
rescued that day! Of course the authors talked about how this was all
because of Shackleton's brilliant leadership (even though he hadn't been at
the camp for months since he had sailed in a lifeboat to get help). What
struck me was that all they had to eat after a while was lots of seal and
penguin which they shot. They were according to the book desparate for
sugar and carbohydrates which they didn't have. It seemed like an
interesting confirmation of the view that a low carb diet with lots of Omega
3 fats is good for the brain. We need less Prozac and more penguin! Ken
