Actually descriptive, if of an archaic
form...baby-talk for the pot under the bed See also
can, below.

Well, that IS what it says on the door. I have always
found it vaguely amusing, by the by, that even a
one-seater in a public place will be designated for
one gender or the other.
At my workplace, otoh, we have the "big potty" for
adults, handicapped, and children by teacher
permission (such as when the other is full), and the
other one (two stalls and one sink) for whomever. Not
forgetting the very exposed mini-potty in the toddler
room....

Anyone know the derivation of this one?

Any relation to jakes, used a few centuries ago?
My favorite, I think, is the Latin necessarium.

I have been in necessaria in nice restaurants and such
which actually contain an anteroom with couch or easy
chairs. Good place to rest.
