Working title: Transfer Admission Counselor
Official title: ADVISOR(R12DN) or ASSOC ADVISOR(R12FN)
Degree and area of specialization: Bachelor's degree required. Degree from a major, public research university preferred.
License/certification: Valid driver's license required.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Experience in university student academic affairs required.
Admissions experience strongly preferred; experience in recruitment, transfer admissions, and transfer course evaluation highly desirable.
Demonstrated ability to exercise judgment in student academic affairs required.
Knowledge of UW-Madison academic programs and student services preferred.
Attention to detail, precision, and strong organizational skills required.
Strong oral and written communication skills required.
Strong interpersonal skills required.
Strong facility with the use of computers in the contemporary work environment (e.g., e-mail, Internet, calendaring, office applications, and end-user computing interfaces) required.
Principal duties:
Evaluate transfer admission applications within the context of undergraduate admission standards, enrollment management policies, specific school/college degree requirements, and academic program selection standards. Exercise judgment in holistic review of application. Assure that complete and accurate notation of these decisions is made on the applicant record.
Communicate and explain admission policies and decisions to applicants, parents, transfer school officials, and to UW-Madison faculty and staff.
Counsel ineligible students on educational alternatives and explain negative admission decisions.
Develop and maintain an up-to-date understanding of UW-Madison academic programs, curriculum, and degree requirements.
Research academic programs and curriculum at transfer institutions and study abroad programs, compare transfer courses with UW-Madison curriculum, and establish transfer course equivalencies.
Serve as transfer admissions and transfer credit liaison to UW-Madison faculty, academic advisors, and student service personnel.
Advise current UW-Madison students intending to take courses at another U.S. university, an international institution, or a study abroad program for transfer credit.
Advise new students on transfer credit evaluation issues at SOAR (Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration) Program.
As member of the transfer team, continually analyze, correct, update, and create new transfer equivalencies within the database of more than 250,000 transfer course equivalencies.
Participate in the analysis of UW System transfer policy and practices, their impact on UW-Madison policies and practices, and ways to implement any necessary changes.
Work collaboratively on projects designed to improve transfer credit service to UW-Madison students, applicants, and prospective students.
Advise and counsel prospective transfer students, parents, and staff at sending institutions about opportunities at UW-Madison, drawing on in-depth knowledge of university academic programs, research opportunities, student services, housing, financial aid, scholarships, student organizations, and the like.
Represent the university in outreach/recruitment activities and college fairs for transfer students (and occasionally for freshmen).
Train, manage, and supervise student employees and their day-to-day activities.
Additional Information:
The University of Wisconsin-Madison invites applications and nominations for three Transfer Admission Counselor positions in the Office of Admissions. The transfer counselors will join a team of eleven permanent undergraduate admission counselors who handle transfer recruitment, admission of transfer, international, and reentry students, and all transfer credit evaluation. The transfer, international, and reentry admission counselors review approximately 9,000 transfer, international, and reentry applications annually and evaluate more than 50,000 transfer equivalencies each year for new and continuing students. In addition to the specialization in transfer issues, the transfer admission counselor must also be well-versed in freshman admission issues.
