Backhoe Operator Finds $46K in Landfill
By Associated Press

July 28, 2004, 4:21 PM EDT

COLUMBUS, Ga. -- One man's trash is another man's -- money? A backhoe
operator found $46,000 in $20 bills, wrapped in clear plastic bags, while
moving garbage at a Columbus landfill, authorities said Tuesday.

"It was found buried in garbage that had been there for some time," Deputy
City Manager Isaiah Hugley said. "It had been there for a number of years."

The employee was digging trenches and moving bags of garbage when he spotted
the money Friday. He notified his supervisor.

Officials with the city revenue department decided to bank the cash, but the
bank was concerned with the smell. While an attempt was made to deodorize
the money, police were notified.

"It smelled like anything else you'd get from a landfill," police Lt. Gil
Slouchick said.

Slouchick said the money was catalogued and stored in the property room of
the Columbus Police Department.

As of Tuesday, police had yet to determine where the money came from -- bank
robbery, drug deal, or from an old mattress? After 90 days, it becomes
abandoned property, Slouchick said, and the city may be eligible to claim
it.
