PBS Launches Kofi Annan Online, Companion Web Site to PBS’ Kofi Annan: Center Of The Storm.

Kofi Annan is widely known as a Nobel Prize-winning statesman and peacekeeper. But who is Kofi Annan? The story of this man from Ghana who rose through the United Nations ranks to become the organization’s seventh Secretary-General is explored in a companion Web site to the landmark PBS documentary KOFI ANNAN: CENTER OF THE STORM. KOFI ANNAN Online, produced by Thirteen/WNET New York, launches December 23, 2002 at http://www.pbs.org/un/

KOFI ANNAN: CENTER OF THE STORM, a co-production of David Grubin Productions and Thirteen, premieres January 7, 2003 at 9 p.m. on PBS (check local listings).

KOFI ANNAN Online expands on the film’s coverage to give visitors a sense of the Secretary-General’s role as the world’s leading diplomat within the context of the United Nation’s global operations. Hotly-contested issues facing the United Nations, from the International Criminal Court to weapons inspectors in Iraq, are explored in online debates between prominent commentators with insight into Mr. Annan’s positions on these matters.

The site also offers an interactive look into the inner workings of the United Nations’ system, from the Security Council to the International Court of Justice, that challenges users to determine how the United Nations makes its decisions. Detailed biographical information on Mr. Annan and past Secretaries-General give a sense of the likely legacy of this global peacemaker.

Web visitors also find video clips, broadcast dates and more information about KOFI ANNAN: CENTER OF THE STORM. Teachers bring global issues into their classrooms with lesson plans that use the United Nations as a springboard to develop conflict resolution, writing and debating skills.

KOFI ANNAN Online is a production of Thirteen Online of Thirteen/WNET New York. It is produced by Elizabeth Owen. Anthony Chapman is executive producer and director of Thirteen Online.

Major support for KOFI ANNAN Online and KOFI ANNAN: CENTER OF THE STORM is provided by The Coca-Cola Company and your local Coca-Cola bottler. Additional funding is provided by the United Nations Foundation and The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.
