Dori, you always crack me up. It would be a kick to meet you in person. Speaking of the news and obesity, has anyone seen the Dateline series with the six dieters? They have been following the progress of six very overweight middle aged men and women using six different diet plans with the goal of losing a certain amount of flab before their high school reunion. As we watched this the other night, as the host introduced each participant and the particular diet he or she would be following, I was commenting to my (non paleo) dh on each of the diets based on my paleoeating perspective. I was pleasantly amused to discover that my predictions were very accurate: the guy on the Atkins diet lost the most weight in the first 3 months (50lbs.) Those using weight watchers and a personal weight loss coach fared moderately well; the man on Slim Fast was famished but ultimately lost a little weight; and the intensive exercise lady lost none. The one shocker was the pastry chef who underwent hypnosis and tied with the Atkins guy, also losing 50 lbs. The man on Atkins also had a serious gout flare up, (apparently gout is aggravated by consumption of red meat?) An Atkins specialist adjusted his diet and the gout went away. And that's NBC Dateline...

veritable cornucopia of stories on obesity lately, especially the latest on
obesity and cancer. I don't have any real wisdom to offer but I can't help
but chuckle. The Establishment is still by and large blaming it on fat and
as soon as you see a story on obestiy and cancer, it's followed by an ad for
some new Frankenfood or yet another prescription which always includes a
disclaimer which usually takes longer than the rest of the ad and always
comes in that quick, hushed tone: "People who smoke should not take this
medication. Side effects may include bone loss, heart attack or, in rare
cases, death. Not recommended for women who may be pregnant, are thinking
of becoming pregnant or want to keep their uterus handy. See your doctor if
you notice pain, swelling, psychic visions, double vision or think for sure
your kidney just exploded. Don't take this medication before you drive.
Just stay home, let it work and hold on for dear life." Okay, not quite but
not far from it, either. Do you think they'll EVER catch a clue?
