'Unfit' Castle beer impounded

The Nation (Nairobi)
August 6, 1999
By Nation Correspondent

Nairobi - Public health officers in Busia yesterday impounded 133 crates of
contaminated Castle beer.

The beers were impounded at the Castle Beer Depot in Busia town after
complaints from consumers that they contained foreign substances.

Led by the deputy district public health officer, Mr. Gordon Ogutu, and the
officer in charge of food quality control Mr. George Kagwa, the officials
raided the depot and seized the crates which contained the contaminated
beer before they declared it unfit for human consumption.

Mr. Ogutu said the raid will also be extended to bars which have been
supplied with the beverages.

He said samples of the contaminated beer will be taken to the Government
Chemist for analysis before the depot owner is taken to court.

They also impounded 10 cartons of contaminated Tusker Malt beer from two
local depots.
