The first time I came across John Ogbu's work I almost got a heart
attack. Some of you would be familiar with his infamous "Involuntary"
and "Voluntary" minorities argument. His latest claims, I fear, are
still tilted toward the same philosophy of blaming the victim. How could
you blame maginalized peoples for the educational inequalities when
racist nativism actually dominates our curriculum policies?? Come to
think of the No Child Shall be Left UnTested document introduced by
President Bush, as an example. And again, I don't intend to attack
Professor Ogbu as a person. I will be the first one to ackowledge his
high accomplishment as an Anthropologist, but like many of you on this
list serv, I do think that his findings are empirically flawed. But wait
until the book comes out.

Thanks Felix, but I do not think that changes anything. The blackman, that
African who wrote that book or research paper is an opportunistic
nut,but for the N.Y.Times to just run away with a story like that which
boxes a whole people in a single category of failure is irresponsible
and smells of bigotry.
Besides,my past interaction with Westerners journalists in Africa has
been that most of them only want to hear and see the darkside of our
continent. I know numerous instances where Africans have deliberately
misinformed Western reporters and researchers as long as they got paid.
Those deliberate lies have been reported in western media as truths and
other misinformation about Africa is reposed for research purposes in
colleges and universities throughout the U.S and Europe.I cannot change
my position about the N.Y.Times given their history of negativity
towards Africa and the BLAC RACE .

Mathew,

The book was written by & the research was conducted by a black man; an
African to be specific.

There we go again, N.Y.Times and their BIG, FAT LIES.

Considering the population differences between African-Americans and
European-Americans, the media would not tell you that the vast number of
failures at education are indeed whites, not blacks.

This deliberate attempt to show blacks in a negative light by the
American media,is designed to demoralize the black population in
America. The media is constantly feeding Americans with depressing news
about the state of African- Americans. This attitude has not changed in
over three hundred years.Using blacks as scapegoats has over the
centuries helped their European-American compatriots deal with their own
failures and limitations....They now call racism. A wrong word to
describe the practice. It is called INSECURITY.Blacks bashing and
lynching has been an effective therapeutic tool for European-Americans
to deal with low self-esteem and other image issues in their lives over
four hundred years.

The practice is simple but a really effective tool for anyone trying to
improve their self-image inorder to feel good about themselves; DRAG
SOMEONE ELSE IN THE MUD INORDER TO ELEVATE ONESELF.

I generally think very lowly of the American media. They do not have a
sense of fairness and justice. The media is driven by profit and greed
and the few really good journalists are losing their media platform to
the onslaught of conservatism.

By headlining the (questionable) filure of black students, the N.Y.Times
is deliberately misinforming to the rest of the world about the state of
blacks here.

I have lived in Europe for a number of years and I can tell you ALL
EUROPEANS, without ANY exception are fascinated and intrigued by
BLACK-AMERICANS, their way of life, and their creative genusis.THEY
ABSOLUTELY ADORE BLACK PEOPLE.That is why from the blues, jazz,
rock'n'roll, rythmn' N' blues,pop,rap, hip-hop, America continues to
reap billoins and billions and billions of dollars from the rest of the
world while blacks continue to be demonized at every opportunity.

Black student failure? A big deal for sure because black students may
not be studying hard or taking their education seriously enough. But the
subliminal message the N.Y.Times is insinuating is the questioning the
black intellect.

I am sick and tired of all the lies in the media about balck this, black
that.All a bunch garbage.

We know what the problem in the black community is; ALCOHOLISM AND
DRUGS.We have to find a way to deal with this MENACE.ALL the so-called
black leaders are avoiding this ONE for whatever reason. If anyone thinks
law enforcement has any interest or motiviation to eradicate drugs from
black communities, you just kidding yourself. However, considering that
of the NEARLY 45 MILLION BLACKS IN AMERICA, 600,000 or LESS THAN 1.3%
are involved in crime and most of these are victimless,we do have reason
to celebrate and congradulate ourselves. It could have been worst, given
the RELENTLESSNESS with which law enforcement is pursueing blacks
inorder to put them in jail.

There are very many wealthy blacks in America,so why can we not have (A
GLOBAL BLACK MEDIA NETWORK LIKE CNN?) IT IS ABOUT TIME. The N.Y.Times is
releasing A LOT OF HOT AIR.
