BY TIM REID OF THE LONDON TIMES
HUNDREDS of plainclothes police carried out early
morning raids yesterday on suspected racists in London.
The huge Scotland Yard operation showed its
determination to stamp out racial violence in the wake of
the Stephen Lawrence report.
A hundred people were arrested across the capital and
Home Counties. Among those held were suspected
football hooligans featured in a recent undercover
investigation by the BBC.
The raids, which began at 6am, were part of Operation
Athena, a Metropolitan Police campaign against racist
crime co-ordinated by the force's Racial and Violent
Crime Task Force, created last year after Sir William
Macpherson's critical report into the death of Stephen
Lawrence.
