Bingo! But more complex. African American teachers and other complain all
the time without results. And, teachers themselves are racially
discriminated against. So, they are constantly disciplined or in jeopardy
of being disciplined. Even though their mortgage payment and their
children's school tuition are at risk, many African American teachers have
been complaining for years.
I still remind you that, in the 60's in Milwaukee, for over a year, parents
filled the auditorium in which school board meetings were held. And,
hundreds more marched outside. Still the Milwaukee Public School (MPS)
Board voted like we did not exist.
As Jesse Jackson will soon discover, school boards are ultra-immutable. In
the 60's, the MPS District staff was almost all Euro-American. Recently, I
went to the MPS district office and the place is full of Staff-of-Color.
But the schools are worse today than they were in the 60's.
Most would be very surprised at the volume of complaints by teachers and
parents about the schools. Many African American teachers and professionals
circumvent the issue by sending their own children to private schools. We
have not abandoned the public schools -- the public schools have abandoned
us!!
Freedom is a constant struggle.
