The last couple of times I've looked at problems like this, I found
the TEMP directory very full, accounting for over half the space on
the hard drive, and even interfering with the ability of the swap
file to grow.

If the defrag ran in reasonable time, then the drive is not
actually full.

I had a machine that was terribly slow when I tried to have both
McAfee and Norton antivirus products installed....
