Soy has more protein than rice milk. Edensoy soy milk has 10 grams per 8 oz.
verse rice milk which only has 1 gram per oz. That is why so many dieticans
recommend looking at soy as an alternative source of protein. However, soy is
also one of the top 10 allergens. Because you avoid citric acid you may want
to find other foods with vitamin C - one good source is potatoes with 25 to 30
mgs of vitamin C. Juices fortified with vitamin C also helps with the vitamin C
requirements. Can your doctor refer you to a good dietician? When meeting with
a dietician, make sure you ask for one that has experience with food allergies.
I would not try the carnation or boost products. When my son was young we tried
the Hypoallergic formula by Carnation and my son stopped breathing (anaphylatic
to dairy) because of whey (a milk protein). So, please becareful. Don't try
goats milk either!
The Food Allergy Network at http://www.foodallergy. org/ has great resources, in
particular the nutrition guide lists certain allergens, and what vitamins are
missing when avoiding those foods. Ask for their yellow read a label cards to
you can see what milk can be hidden as on a label (ex. whey, casine, lactose
etc.)
We too used Nursoy formula until it was no longer available in the US (thank
goodness at $ 2.59 a can a day it added up quickly).
You asked:
I have a 21 month old daughter who is allergic to milk, eggs, and citrus.
She is gaining very little weight and actually has lost some weight over the
past month. (She has gained a total of 14 ounces during the past 5 months.)
She is very small for her age. (Currently she is 20 pounds, 11 ounces.)
The doctor would like to put her on something like Boost or Carnation
instant Breakfast, but I think all of those products contain milk in them.
Does anyone know of similar products that do not contain milk or have
suggestions for other high-calorie foods that I could try?
