By Yahya Dampha FOROYAA 20-23 November 2003
Reliable sources disclosed that the Gambian Ambassador in Libya is finally
packing his luggages for the Gambia after his illegal trafficking of thirty
five kilo of gold some few months ago when he was intercepted at the Tripoli
International Airport in Libya.
Ambassador Lamin Jammeh has written to the Jamahiriyya government to give
him diplomatic immunity when the Libyan Police arrested him with thirty kilos
of gold.
At first his pleadge was dismissed. However he was later pardoned and asked
by the Libyan government to leave their country. This has casued concern
among Gambians in Libya who normally deposit their monies at the Gambia
Embassy for onward delivery to their families in The Gambia.
According to some of these Gambians who spoke to me on the telephone
Ambassador Jammeh called on them to collect their deposit last week when the
Jamahiriyya government finally asked him to leave within twenty-one days.
In a separate development a lot of Gambians who used to work for the
Liberian Embassy in Libya are not paid for their slaraies for over two
years. And the Liberian Ambassador Yankuba Samateh alias Yanks Smart had
left for Ivory Coast and left his workers unpaid. These unpaid workers are
calling on the government of Liberia to make arangements for them so that
they can be paid their dues.
According to these unpaid workers shortly beofre the end of Mose's Blah's
term, Ambassador Smart called on them to prepare their claims for settlement
but since then they did not receive anything. Now that Mr. Smart has left
also they believe that Blah must have paid their salaries and the Ambassador
failed to give them their monies.
Foroyya is relaibly informed that the Gambian Ambassador in Libya, Mr. Lamin
Jammeh has already arrived in The Gambia.
