You would think but, it's never even mentioned by recruiters and when you
are young and impressionable...
I was 17 years old and wanted to see the world, serve my country, and make
some dough for college. they told me I would go to college while in, they
tell you all sorts of things. I'm noticing it's not as bad this time around
as the first Gulf War when people (military no less) were complaining about
sending mothers and fathers away from their children.

do you think that they join not knowing that the military might have to
kill people and break things? even if they join for other benifits, do they
not know the pupose of the military?

Heinlein made a really good point when he wrote the book Starship
Troopers
(if you've seen the movie, other then fighting bugs the book is totally
different). He made the point that the military is doing it all wrong
when
they show all the glamorous sides of the military. I can tell you
during my
stint there weren't high speed boat races. He felt that the recruiters
should be open about what being in the military is all about. Think
about
it, most people go into the military not to be a soldier and fight
people
(although many do), most people go in for the GI benefits, the chance at
college, etc.
