The way I've heard it described, just having low b-12 inhibits
absorption of b-12. So some years of veganism can leave you depleted
which makes you unable to absorb it even if you start eating meat. Then
you need b-12 shots to get out of it. Also that the non-meat sources of
b-12 that vegans are fond of, such as tempeh, have a form of b-12 that
is similar enough to real b-12 that it will occupy receptors but won't
do the proper job of real b-12, so it only makes matters worse.
