I had problems with my network card driver so I deleted the driver and
re-installed it. The name that came up was "Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network
Connection #2". Each time I delete and reinstall, the "#" bumps up - I am
now at #5. Trying to delete these entries in the registry is not possible
since a message comes up saying the it cannot be deleted. Apparently, the
old network connections are still there but not active. This is all under
Windows XP Pro with sp1a installed.
 
My questions to the list are:
1. Is there a way to get rid of these "phantom" network connections?
2. Is there a way to edit a registry file that is separate from the registry
you are currently running? In other words, since I can't delete an entry in
the registry because it is active, I could boot to an alternate install of
XP and then try to edit the now "dormant" registry.
