Got an annoying little problem with a 4-5 yr old PC running on an Asus P2L97
motherboard.

I'm trying to (a): Update the BIOS and (b): Install a new 40G UATA Maxtor
hard drive.

When I coupled up the new HDD as a slave to the existing 2G drive, the PC
wouldn't boot, and the BIOS wouldn't autodetect the drive. Nor would it
accept a description of the drive as 'Auto', 'None', or any combination of
cylinders\heads\sectors etc.

Figuring that the BIOS needed upgrading, I downloaded the latest version I
could find ( a racy November 99 issue), along with a flash program.

But when I attempted to flash the update, I was informed that the EEPROM
wasn't of the flashable type, so, short of trying to obtain a new BIOS chip,
I seem to be stuck with the current BIOS.

I thought I might be able to install a BIOS overlay, but I don't see how I
can get the overlay onto the new drive, if I can't get it to run - kind of a
Catch22 situation.

Ideas would be appreciated.
