Mike-
I've found that screwy RAM is at the root of these things more often than
you might expect. I do things like defrag, clean out temp files, blow away
the swap file (sometimes known as virtual memory), and kill all the
background items with MSCONFIG. If that doesn't work, I start looking at
RAM (easy enough to change out) and the hard drive.
I do MIS desktop support for a County government in Florida, so I get a lot
of chances to play with this stuff. Also, I have the luxury of being able
to completely replace a machine if I can't figure out what's up with it.
That doesn't happen often, but it takes the pressure off a bit to know you
can do it as a last resort. Sometimes you can "fix" a user by changing out
machines- its psychological. The old machine just goes into usable stock
and the user is repaired :)
