        More considerations:
-Internal modems within sound cards: they can free a slot (but use
their own resources).
-Voice modems: I think they use to be internal. It seems more cables
if you have to attach a speaker and a microphone to the external modem. And
may be their functions are easier to integrate with those on the sound card
if internal.
-RJ11 plugs (line/phone): may be more probable to have two in the
external, but one in the internal.
-PnP (Plug and Pray): probably, external ones are not PnP, so easier
to configure, and valid for any operating system.
-Share a modem between computers: you can share an external modem
between computers, with mechanical devices for sharing a printer (or special
electronic), if they are external. Someone has seen an internal printer?
Someone can imagine an internal laser printer?

Starting point: (-1)^(-1) = -1
Applying logarithms: (-1)*ln(-1) = ln(-1)
Since ln(-1) <> 0, dividing: -1 = 1
     (ln(-1) is complex, but exists)
