Sudden collapse plunges worker four floors

A construction worker plunged four stories to his death yesterday when
the platform he was standing on collapsed outside a Brooklyn building,
officials and witnesses said.
Muhamed Jabby, 32, fell face first onto concrete when the platform's
pulley unhooked as he finished washing the windows of a Bushwick
apartment building at 3:15 p.m., police said.
Jabby's co-worker, Mahamadou Dukureh, managed to grab a rope and pull
himself onto the roof of the four-story building.
"He fell down, face down. He said nothing. He didn't scream," said
Dukureh, 28, who had worked with Jabby, a West African immigrant, for
about a year. "It's terrible, just terrible."
Jabby moved to the U.S. from Gambia about six years ago, said his
heartbroken brother, Abdoulie Tunkara, 30.
"He was a very hardworking, good man. He was all about his family and he
prayed regularly," Tunkara said.
Only three months ago, Jabby returned briefly to his native country to
get married. His relatives were trying to reach his wife in Gambia last
night.
"It's very sad for us. He's not like an employee. He's like my brother,"
said Alex Matla, a supervisor at the site for Matla General
Construction.
Dukureh said he doesn't understand how Jabby fell because both of them
had been wearing safety belts as they painted, fixed bricks and washed
windows on the building facade.
A city Buildings Department spokeswoman said the work being done did not
require a permit. The federal Occupational Safety and Health
Administration was investigating.
