I'm trying to install W95b on an old drive (don't laugh - it's for research
purposes:--))) and I keep running into an odd problem.
As usual, I copied the CD files to a folder on the hard drive and then ran
the install from there.
The installation got past #1 and #2 OK, ie:
1.Collecting info.......
2. Copying files.......
But when it got to #3.......
3. Restarting your computer and finishing setup
I hit OK and the DOS screen said 'Starting Windows 95'
Then the screen displayed a blue graphic with a message in red:
'Getting ready to start Windows for the first time'
It kicked into DOS, hiccuped a few times, but then said:
'While initializing device IOS:
Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer'
So I hit Ctrl\Alt\Del which got the DOS menu, with a preference for Safe
Mode.
I hit OK and after a few more coughs, it came back to the same error
message.
Now, I've done this exercise about 4 times, each time a different way, but
it always ends up with the same result.
I've tried other options from the DOS menu, without success. When I
selected 'Command Prompt Only' it got me back to the C prompt, so I changed
to the Windows directory and typed 'win' but that got a complaint about
Himem.sys being missing. So I dunno.......
Anyone have an idea what's prompting this 'While initializing device
IOS:.....error message?
TIA
