Bad news... It sounds like your builder uses "brown box"
OEM drives. Sometimes these are ONLY guaranteed by the
Pc supplier, or have a very short manufacturer warranty.
In any case, the drive is worth about $40(US) new at today's
sizes and prices (if that.)
I would get a replacement as soon as possible and see if you
can get your information and "working" Operating System
installation copied onto a new drive purchased at RETAIL
that has at least the normal three year warranty.
Maxtor's are a little cheaper around where I am, but my last
drive was actually a Western Digital since it was on sale.
(100G, 7200rpm,ATA100 for $100(US) - and that was a
while ago...)
