Would explain his use of .223 and .308 rounds.  My father, who helped
design
the USMC M40A1 rifle in 1966 (he mustered out in '69), much preferred
the
heavier 7.62X51 (.308) over the .223.  Anyway, both are current NATO
issue.
To be honest, if the guy is certified "gung-ho", then he's probably
using
variants of this rifle:

There's also been speculation that he's a deserter from the French army
who
went AWOL a few weeks ago while on assignment in the US.  The French
authorities reported him to Interpol, who in turn reported him to the
US.
Apparently this guy is a crack rifleman.
