I've been doing a lot of investigating. Yes as someone on the list called
me, I am an information hound, and being one is the only way to feel good
about making sure I'm doing this gluten-free thing correctly.

I've spoken to a worker at the Celiac Disease Foundation in Studio City, CA
who said the director is Ceiac and dirnks coffee from a machine with paper
filters. The worker said she has NEVER in all her years dealt with this
question and never thought it was an issue.

I spoke to a volunteer at the Gluten Intolerance Group of North America in
Seattle who put me on hold and spoke to the director of that organization,
again a Celiac, who said that to their knowledge coffee filters are not an
issue for Celiacs. They drink coffee in the office.

I'm now thinking of calling some of the most renowned doctors to find out if
they have ever heard of coffee filters containing gluten and getting into
the beverage.

For what its worth, people have suggested to me that I just get a gold
coffee filter and brew my coffee at home. This is what I plan on doing. But
I also want to be able to enjoy a decaf when I'm out with my friends at
Starbucks or the local Beanery in San Francisco without worrying that I am
contaminating myself. And I want to be able to share that with the whole
list.

I've contacted several big chains (Starbucks, Tullys, Peets) and they cant
seem to tell me for sure if there is gluten in the coffee filters. They say
to ask the manufacturer. Thing is, there are so many suppliers and
distributors and cross-relationships within the coffee product business that
its nearly impossible to be sure certain filters came from anywhere
specific.
