The response was so BIG, I'm at a loss as to where to begin, but here
goes!

SMALL APPLIANCES:
-By far the most popular two kitchen appliances are the Kitchen Aid mixer
and the Cuisinart food processor. But there was an interesting opinion
expressed about food processors.

-"If my house was on fire, I would save my KitchenAid mixer."

-"I used to do all my chopping & shredding by hand, but I developed
bursitis in my right shoulder which made this difficult. I borrowed my
neighbor's Cuisinart. It has so many parts & pieces I found it very
awkward to use. Then when my neighbor told me that replacing one part
costs as much as a new food processor, I decided to try a less expensive
model. I bought the GE food processor for $39 at Walmart. I love it. My
shoulder is much better now! It does everything the Cuisinart does for a
whole lot less money & it's much easier to use. I could buy three or
four GE processors before I'd spend as much on one of the newer
Cuisinarts!"

-"I love my Osterizer blender & mini chopper. It's quicker & easier to
chop an onion in the mini chopper than my food processor. It makes great
hummus, too." ~Val

-"Microwave oven" [Isn't that a "given?" ha ha!]

-Automatic rice cooker (4 or 5 mentioned this)

-"Another thing I use a lot is my Cuisinart hand food processor. You
know, the thing you can use in the skillet to break up gravy lumps, or
use to make good milkshakes? I love it, got it for about $30 at Home
Depot, I think it was a close-out. Now that I have it though, I wish I
would have gotten a cordless one. The cord is a pain in the rear, and I
would hope the new one would be easier to hang."

-" My dehydrator (American Harvest)." [mentioned by two people]

-"My meat slicer (for making jerky)."

-"Cheap non-stick waffle iron. Easy to wipe after use. Make a large batch
& freeze."

-"Just got the Villaware Electric tortilla maker, but haven't tried it
yet. On sale right now.

-"My favorite "tool" is my electric yogurt maker. The brand machine I
have is Donvier.... I love making yogurt to my own specs - using fat-free
milk, fortifying it with additional dried non-fat milk powder and then
flavoring and/or sweetening it with my own choice of ingredients."

-"Most definitely my 20 year old waterless pan.I steam and broil and
reduce sauces, make chinese dishes and resouffles and make sticky sauce
etc.in it,am lost without it. My latest that my son and hubby love is to
steam in own juice, garlic and G.F. thai soy sauce, chicken or steak. Add
a splash of mango and orange juice, and marinate until 10 min .before
serving.Add a knob of butter and reduce juice with lid removed until it
forms a sticky coating sauce.Serve and enjoy. Also use it to parsteam
chicken and then barbeque(or South African braai)."

-"my hand blender...It's a Braun. I got it at Walmart a couple of years
...about $20. Nice that it twists apart in in the middle since it's easy
to wash & is also shorter to store to two pieces."

-"Oh, I also love my coffee grinder when I need to grind up a small
amount of rice and mung to make hot cereal, or if I want to make a small
amount of almond flour, or grind up flax seeds. I also love it for my
fresh coffee ever day!"

-"Vitamix ... A lot of smoothies and ice cream, mostly. It is overrated
as a substitute for a food processor, but it does do a mean puree for
soups. We have some other food issues besides celiac, and it is sooo nice
to just throw a bunch of stuff in the vitamix and have a smoothie fast.
If I knew of a cheaper blender that was as consistently powerful, I would
have gotten it instead, but such a thing doesn't seem to exist. "

-"Bread machine (I never wanted one, but I was won over when I saw how
nicely it made gf bread, and how nice the crust was relative to the gf
bread that I baked in the oven)" [bread machines mentioned by 4 or 5
people]

-"I also like my crockpot - just throw all the stuff in before I leave
for work, and when I get home there is dinner." [Two mentioned the
usefullness of crock pots.]

-"My summer favorite utensil is the gas grill - quick and tasty."
