Subject: New Working Draft: Inacessibility of Visually-Oriented Anti-Robot
Tests: Problems and Alternatives

Dear WAI Interest Group Participants:

On 5 November 2003 the W3C/WAI Protocols and Formats Working Group (PFWG)
published a Working Draft of a paper addressing accessibility problems with
visual Turing tests, also known as CAPTCHAs.

These tests, which involve visual verification of a bitmapped image, are
increasingly being used to limit access to services made available over the
Web. They present a major problem to users who are blind, have low vision,
or have a learning disability such as dyslexia. This Working Draft examines
a number of potential solutions that allow systems to test for human users
while preserving access by users with disabilities.
