Just my two cents on this topic:

I am hearing and visually impaired, and for me,
obviously lipreading does help, and it has become
more difficult over time as my vision, due to RP,
has deteriorated.  The vision helps in terms of
being able to look around and be aware of which
person is talking, ie, which person's lips are
moving even if you are not actively reading the
person's lips.

I think that even normally hearing sighted people
DO read lips a bit, to fill in for things they
miss, in a noisy environment, even if they do not
consciously realize they are doing this.
