Hi, well, for what it's worth, I have a vx-5.
It does exactly the same thing, I.E. it'll do a tone search on a given
signal.
If memory serves, you need to bring up the ctcss menu, and ensure the rig is
in ctcss receive. That is: it'll respond to the tone when it finds it.
Then in the case of my radio, you hold down the 2 key. After a long while,
it'll find the signal, assuming it's still transmitting.
But, like yourself the manual for the vx-5 has always been a bit vague.
