Dear Felix:
Thank you for informing us about Nigeria's
Independence celebrations and, especially for your
invitation to the community.
It is important that we come together to celebrate
such an occasion. What is even more important is to
know why we should celebrate. As Professor Ali Mazrui
noted, Nigeria is the "natural leader" in West Africa.
By virtue of her population and wealth, this
assertion is undisputable. Furthermore, Nigeria has
produced an enviable intellingesia capable of creating
the Nigeria of our dreams.
Upon Nigeria's 39th "birthday," we should learn
something. Even more than learning, we should know
the positions of the Nigerian intellengsia in Madison
regarding every facet of the Nigerian situation within
the context of the African situation.
Nigeria has a leadership responsibility in Africa.
Every Nigerian and African should understand this.
Whether it is acknowledged or not, it is an inherent
responsibility that has already been tested within the
West African sub-region. At her 39th birthday, we
should not settle for less.
Why then reduce such an important moment to a "soccer
match", "fashion show" and "dance"? Please, tap into
the Nigerian and African Community human resource pool
and give us more.
In the pursuance of African Unity, it is our
inalienable right to secure a better and forward
looking Nigeria.
Again, thanks for the invitation
Best Regards,
Askia
