Dr. Sherrill Sellers, an Assistant Professor at the UW School of Social
Work, has been awarded a grant by the UW-Madison Health & Society Research
Competition, sponsored by the RWJ Health & Society Scholars Program at the
University of Wisconsin-Madison to conduct the Madison Pilot of the Health
and Well-Being of African Immigrant Children and their Families.”
The Madison Pilot is part of a larger project under the leadership of Dr.
Gloria Johnson-Powell, MD, Director of the Center for the Study of Cultural
Diversity in Healthcare and Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics and will
serve as a model for four other cities conducting similar research.
Specific aims of the project are to 1. gain an improved understanding of the
physical health and well being of African immigrant children (ages 10-17)
and their families; 2. investigate intra- and inter-group differences in
vulnerability and responsiveness to immigrant experience, as measured by
differences in health outcomes, social resources, and coping strategies; and
3. gain an understanding of program and policy ingredients of a culturally
competent network of care for African immigrant children and families.
As part of our outreach programs the African Association of Madison, Inc. is
collaborating with the researchers for this project. Families and
individuals will be receiving mailings soliciting for participants. You are
strongly encouraged to be part of this project.
Thanks.
Joe Brewoo
President,
African Association of Madison, Inc.
