Hi, Velia!

Flax is not one of the cereal grains. It is not related to
them. According to my Webster's dictionary, flax is "any of a genus (Linum
of the family Linaceae, the flax family) of herbs; esp : a slender erect
annual (L. usitatissimum) with blue flowers commonly cultivated for its
bast fiber and seed..." Linen is made from the fiber, and flaxseed/linseed
oil is made from the seed.

Hope this helps.

Jane
