thanks for your note. I had not realized there was a Scan function - I ran
it and it told me that the directory was gone and that the problem could
not be corrected. So I reformatted.
It was a brand new disk but I had transferred a lot of data to it and i
think one of the longer transfers got garbled. Live and learn.
