Everybody has bowel movements all the time!!! If your bowels stop pushing the food forward you die! What you refer to as BMs is actually the final emptying of the bowels.

William!
I don't think it has too much to do with the English language, but everything to do with Amurr'can prudishness. Ten years ago, while planning a trip to Scotland (among others to look for ancestors and relatives) I borrowed a bunch of guidebooks from my local library. One of them (at least) was of American origin, and actually had a British- American word-list. I'll never forget it:
lavatory - bathroom
toilet - bathroom
WC - bathroom

And of course not on that tourist-adapted list:
ass - donkey
cock - rooster

Really, what's with them yanks?
Erik F.
