I haven't met any Japanese who eat whole grains, even brown bread is
rather scarce. Whole grain rice is so rare that we have to order it
special from a small mill (my wife likes it). It may be different in
Okinawa.
A Japanese doctor I knew studied kidney function. He claimed the
Okinawans were long lived because of all the pork they ate, which he
said is very good for healthy kidneys.
