Consensus is: DelGrosso, Prego (traditional only), Classico (red sauces only), Ragu and Newman's Own are safe bets. If you are sensitive to cornstarch, watch out for Five Brothers (see below). And watch out for Barilla as they cannot guarantee third party spices are GF (see note from mfr below).

See summaries below
Thanks to everyone for your responses!

DelGrosso
out of Tipton, PA.
it is half the price of some major brands, has no starch or anything other than groceries in it.

Prego
traditional, it's GF for sure....
Prego advises that only the "traditional" varieties of their sauces are GF.
TIP: add some canned tomatoes, gives it some body.
TIP: also use V8 juice to flavor soups etc

Classico
has right on its website that all its red sauces are gf (I can't
remember what it says about its white suaces and I don't use them)
Classico Sauces are all gluten-free, per a phone call 7/15/02.

Ragu
advises that all varieties of their pasta sauces are GF.
All Rich and Meaty sauces by Ragu are also GF

Newman's Own
has stated that all of their spaghetti sauces are gluten free, per email

 Five Brothers
Bertolli (Five Brothers) use corn for their modified food starch. They
told me that the other ingredients are "proprietary," so they couldn't
say for sure if their spices were pure or not. We have used this sauce
and have been fine, but that is not to say that it is definitely GF.

Healthy Choice
plain

home made using Del Monte canned tomatoes

~~~~~~~~
I was thinking about buying Barilla Pasta Sauces, wrote the company, this
is the response I got. I won't be purchasing their sauces.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This letter is to express our thanks for your interest and support.
Barilla is the best selling pasta company worldwide, and we take pride in
our product, right down to every last package. For over 120 years,
generations of Barilla have maintained the family tradition of producing
the finest pasta and sauces in the world.
Barilla's tomato based sauces are dairy free. However, we can not claim to
be gluten free as we do not have certification from our ingredient
suppliers that all the ingredients are gluten free.
Thank you again for your support, we hope that you continue to purchase and
enjoy Barilla Pasta & Sauces.
Regards,
Barbara Knudtson
