question to the list - i'm trying to find out if one can develop a bowel infection when gluten makes its way into the system.
my mom is a biopsy confirmed celiac of 10 years and has survived the whipple surgery to remove a cancerous tumour on her colon. since that succesful surgery, now cancer free, she has suffered a few setbacks. this last one has been near fatal and she has been trying to recover in a toronto hospital. the staff there does not seem informed about celiac and gluten free diets, and have diagnosed her now with a bowel infection after a stool sample was taken. she's been suffering with diarhea for a few days now - her abdomen has been distended, gurgling and painful. we know that she has mistakenly ingested gluten. the staff have not hinted to acknowledging that my mom could be having a gluten reaction. i'm wondering if a gluten reaction can lead to or be mistaken for a bowel infection.
any advice??
thanks - nadia in toronto, canada
