Hello Listers,
In wrapping up my decisions about buying a new computer system, I
have 3 questions below.
I know that several of you will have some great feedback, and I
suspect that others on this list would like to hear it.
If you don't respond to the group in general, I will collect the
responses that you send to me, then forward them all at once to
the group.
Thanks,
Peter
1. Is there a laptop for which the screen can be turned off?
This would be useful for saving battery power.
2. What is the best scanner, type and/or brand, for scanning
thick books, especially hardcovers?
As you know, for the print closest to the binding, it is
difficult or impossible to press it flush up against the scanning
surface.
There must be a scanner designed to deal with this problem. I'm
thinking possibly a scanner that is able to scan right up to the
edge of one side of the unit. This would require that the book be
opened only 90 degrees, and positioned so that the scanning edge
is wedged into the binding, where the print would be lying flat.
3. Is there a program that can dial a phone number that is
displayed on the screen?
We are familiar with this functionality when we dial-up to
connect to the Internet. Some may have also used this type of
feature on a P D A.
Of course, tele-marketers and poling companies must have
specialized, industrial-strength data bases from which the caller
simply presses one key to dial the number on the screen. But I'm
looking for this feature within a more common program, or as a
utility that can be added on.
