I'm fairly sure you will need a ISA slot modem for a machine of that
vintage.
And one that is a "hardware" modem as opposed to a "winmodem"
Or you could use an external serial port modem.
I like US Robotics (3com) modems mainly because the drivers are easy to
find.
Just checked www.pricewatch.com several ISA modems are listed in the $20
range.
I still use ISA modems once in awhile for older machines I repair.
