You will need to inform the BIOS in your older model Compaq that the hard
drive parameters have changed. The BIOS access program DID exist on your
old Compaq hard drive and was accesed at bootup by pressing the F10 key. As
you now have a different hard drive, that F10 access to setup is no longer
available as (presumably, unless you have gone out of your way to re-create
it) the proprietary non-DOS Compaq setup partition is not present on your
new drive. You will have to download the BIOS setup routine from Compaq:
http://www.compaq.com/support/files/deskpro/us/index.html

Then run the Compaq setup from a floppy, allow the BIOS setup routine to
re-initialize the hard drive parameters and then all should be well.

> I recently installed a small hard drive (2.5 gig) in a Compaq Deskpro to
be used for email and very light duties on the net, when I tried a reboot it
gave me the error message "1782 disk controller failure" and it only goes
thru its boot after it gives me a blue command button to press f1 to boot?
not sure what I've done wrong I installed windows 98 and all went smoothly,
any help would be apreciated.
