In regards to dairy being off topic. IMHO
people will come to this list with all kinds of dietary backgrounds with the
intention of learning something about paleodiets. Some of those people will
be heavily into dairy, others no dairy at all and all grades in between.
When dairy products are so ubiquitous it doesn't seem reasonable to excude
their discussion. It is the same with oils, how often in paleotimes could
someone get a bottles worth of olive oil - very unlikely. However, many
people who come to this list will be using vegetable oils because they too
are ubiquitous. Do we stop discussing oils as well?

This type of "purity" is evident in other groups as well. I used to be a
member of historical re-enactment groups where some people allow no
deviation from the "pure" ideal, others who just dabble and don't really
care about "purity" and shades in between. The hardcore ones are nicknamed
"authenticity fascists". This issue over dairy is reminiscent of ward
nicholson's piece on the psychology of extreme diets where "purity" rules.

Personally, I exclude dairy because I want to experience a paleodiet that
didn't include it and see how it affects my health. However, I am
interested in other peoples experiences with dairy because some people could
benefit from a paleostyle diet with raw dairy products in it. I won't know
unless I hear other views.

Anyway, jumping off my soapbox right now

cheers

Sean
