Of course, the key words here are "short-term." Following such diets,
including the popular Atkins Diet which first gained recognition in the
1970s, for three or four months is fine. But--you knew there was a "but"
coming--lead study author Dr. Bonnie J. Brehm warned that despite the
short-term benefits, these diets are still not a healthy option over the long
haul. Brehm and her team put 53 obese women on a diet for six months. Half
followed a low-carbohydrate, high-protein plan in which less than 10 percent
of their calories came from carbs. The other half followed a standard low-fat
diet with only 30 percent of their calories coming from fat. Both groups had
the same number of calories a day. The results? Those on the low-carb,
high-protein plan lost 10 more pounds of body weight and 6 more pounds of
body fat than those following the low-fat plan. But even more telling, blood
pressure and blood sugar were normal for both groups. How? Brehm told Reuters
that she suspects the benefits of losing weight offset the disadvantages of
eating foods high in fat and cholesterol.
