Nigeria to meet Cameroon
By Mark Gleeson
BBC Sport, Johannesburg
Nigeria beat Ethiopia 4-0 in the semi-final of the African Women's
Championship in Johannesburg on Tuesday to set up a grande finale against
neighbours Cameroon on Sunday.
Earlier in the day, the Indomitable Lionesses edged out Ghana 1-0 after
extra-time to reach their first ever final.
In the second semi, two goals from Cynthia Uwak steered defending champions
Nigeria into their fourth successive final.
The Super Falcons, who have taken all three previous titles, took the lead
as early as the third minute through Uwak and went on to totally dominate a
one-sided game in the Johannesburg Stadium.
Tuesday's semi-finals
Ghana 0-1 Cameroon
Nigeria 4-0 Ethiopia
Ethiopia, the surprise package of the tournament, showed why they had made
the final four in patches with their tricky play and work rate.
Yet they were let down by goalkeeper Liya Shibru who spilt a 26th minute
effort from Effioanwan Ekpo into her net as the Falcons extended their lead.
Shibru was immediately replaced by coach Alemnesh Abebe but Ethiopia's
defensive woes continued as Uwak added a third goal before half-time.
Nigeria took their foot off the attacking pedal in the second half and both
sides tired quickly but the tournament's top goalscorer Perpetua Nkwocha
still had time to net a fourth in the 68th minute.
She has now scored five times at the tournament, more than making up for the
absence of former African women's Footballer of the Year Mercy Akide.
Nigeria have won every edition of the African Women's Championship so far -
winning in 1998, 2000 and 2002.
