For those groups working on banking access, here's some useful information
about when refuses to honor a legitimately disputed charge.

    Appealing a Credit-Card Claim

March 25, 2004

Q: Is there anything I can do if my credit-card issuer has denied a
disputed-charge claim?

    --Junko Varga, Arlington, Va.

A: You can try appealing the decision to a government agency called the
Customer Assistance Group, which helps consumers resolve disputes with
national banks. Last year, some $6.8 million in contested charges and fees
was returned to consumers; that included thousands of cases with charges as
low as $25.

Start by asking your card company for any documentation supporting its
decision -- it's required by law to provide that information. Then make
copies, and file a complaint with the CAG. For more information, call the
group (800-613-6743) or see its Web site at
www.occ.treas.gov/customer.htm
