Nicotinic acid and niacin are NOT interchangeable for this purpose (though
they are for most other purposes). The metabolism of nicotinic acid has some
effect that lowers cholesterol. This does not apply to niacin. Both can make
you flush (but you get used to it) This is why B-complex make some people
flush. (It's the B2 that makes your peepees turn yellow).
