I'm a college student who quite recently has been extremely sick. I
started out in the ER and was misdiagnosed as having mono. After a week
of not getting better, I ended up back in the ER. I was severely
dehydrated, weak, and had a lot of abdominal bloating, cramping, and
pain. This time they didn't find anything abnormal, beside my potassium
levels being low--a sign of dehydration. I found an internal medicine
dr. who ordered many tests and referred me to a GI dr. as well. I went
through weeks of different tests, only to have all of them come back as
normal. This was extremely frustrating to me as I certainly was not
feeling any better and wasn't imagining the pain and discomfort I was
in. My GI dr. ordered the Celiac blood test, and after a few weeks of
waiting, I received news that it was positive for celiac. I had an
endoscopy last Friday after being gluten free for 3 weeks. I got the
results today from my biopsy, and they were normal. My GI Dr. couldn't
officially diagnose me as a celiac because the endoscopy biopsies were
normal. He told that because I'd changed my diet I had healed myself.
I wanted to get feedback from others about how you were diagnosed and
what you think about my case. To me, it seems pretty safe to assume
that I am a celiac because as soon as I changed my diet I started to see
and feel an improvement in the way I felt.
