Haven't tried the Zone calculator, but by the Eades' Protein Power book, I
require 63 gms. The problem with calculations is that meat is not pure
protein but includes intramuscular fat, the amounts varying depending on the
type of animal, the individual animal itself, and the particular cut of meat
from the animal. In other words 3 oz of "meat" does not automatically
equate to--what is it?--21 gms of protein. I think that's right that there's
"supposed to be" 7 gms of protein in 1 oz of meat. (Have lent my books to
husband's secretary, so can't look it up.) In reality then, even the
leanest of the lean (turkey breast?) would be just slightly under 7 gms, and
less lean cuts (ribeye steak) would be quite a bit under, maybe about 3.5-4
gms. per oz. Am guessing here, but you get my point. So, if I'm reasoning
this correctly, the leaner the meat, the smaller the portion size, and the
fattier the meat (intramuscular fat), the larger the portion size if we're
aiming to get a certain amount of protein at each meal or each day. Sabe?
Sound right?
