A young preacher was once contacted by the local funeral director to fill
in last-minute and hold a graveside committal service at a small local
cemetery for someone who had died with no family or friends.

The preacher started early and set out on the rural route, but quickly
ended up lost after making several wrong turns on poorly-mapped country
roads. He finally arrived a half-hour late, and saw that the hearse was
nowhere in sight, and the workmen were eating lunch in the field.

The pastor walked to the open grave and found the vault lid already
closed and in place. Taking out his book, he proceeded to read the> service
to commit the soul to eternity.

As he was returning to his car, one of the workmen turned to the other
and said,
"Think maybe we'd better tell him that was the septic tank...?"
