Actually,
I've been reading a great book by David McCollough (sp?) called John Adams.  It gives a little more rounded debate on this topic and puts it into historical context.  Being that Jefferson thought that every country should have a revolution every now and then to shake things up (this from a man who did not participate in any of the fighting).  Vs. Adams who was much more into developing a well ordered society that ensured from the beginning that those with the most whether money, ambition or talent would not be able to repress those that had less.
Basically, in the short version, there's more to that story.
